Is this WR 450F worth $4200?

Recommended Posts

I hope I don't have to keep posting these listing ever few days but I am in searching mode. I want to buy me a clean 450 but realize I am buying used also. I have a chance at an 08 WR 450F that the guy is asking $4500 for but will take $4200 bottom line. Looks to be an exceptionally clean bike but you just never no. What do you think. Is this a good deal or keep looking. I figure it will cost me another grand by the time I do all the big boy mods to it like it will need. Or any bike I buy for that matter.. I will need Suspension redone, Tall bars, Risers, Tall seat, lowboy pegs etc. Here is the Ad...

I usually keep an eye on KSL ads for WRs. If it really has a full exhaust and a rekluse still on it.....then yes. I'd pay $4,300 for it given what they seem to be listed for around here. It also looks like it has a tall seat and aftermarket spring on it. Might be closer to setup for a tall dude than you think. Before I went up there I would call around and low ball the other's on KSL. I think I saw a few pretty clean 2007 on there for $3,200 and $3,400 if the exhaust and rekluse aren't important to you. Good luck.

OP, I think $4200 is a little high, but if its truly as nicely modded and taken care if as it looks and sounds, it's not by much and may be worth the few extra $$$$'s. Look at the one below for comparison:

^^^ This one be a bit high in my book. You posted this and asked the question but if I were looking at a WR that needed a topend job including a new cylinder, e-start repair (these are good systems if maintained snd not abused) as well as new rear spokes, I'd run at $3500 as it screams "beat to hell" and sounds like it has had quite few hard street miles on its rear wheel; my fear would be tranny issues and no new crank in your rebuild. And lack of regular maint.

JMHO, so take it as you will both OP and above seller. When I buy a bike it's to keep it a while so to spend $200-$300 extra on a good one is well worth it. We are starting to get back into riding season again so prices are on the rise.

There is no way from his list of parts that you can tell if the bike was babied or thrashed.

Some people change top ends every 200-250 miles, to prevent catastrophic failures.

The only way to know is to physically inspect it for abuse, neglect, and wear.

5 strategically taken photos can make a bike look reasonable, or very unreasonable to purchase.

Every city has a different level of demand for a specific model.

In Los Angeles, a low-hour 2008 can sell for $4200.00, but you can't give away an 2006 or before.

I bought a 2007 with 60 hours on it, that had been looped, for $2600.00.

I'm looking at plated '08's that are going for $5000+, even with high miles.

I will agree that different areas have different demands which therefore affect prices, however I think the bike the OP listed pics of may still be a couple hundred high, which is what I stated.

The second bike, if I read what was listed in an ad I would walk away from. Tell me how you need to replace rear spokes on an 08 without abusing a bike? Replacing a cylinder on a WR as part if a top end job? VERY few people do PM on 4 stroke dirt bikes, hell I bet 60% of owners have never checked their valves, so thinking the listed items are PM is guessing quite a bit. My guess is lack of PM is why all that was replaced.

Like you mentioned pics can show or hide; with a repair list as stated I'd be quite wary. My opinion only; I read what was done different than you. Your opinion.

I agree with you. I just don't believe a description or a picture tells more than a few percent of the story.

Hell, he could have sucked something into the carb, and trashed the cylinder.

He also could have run over a pucker bush, and damaged one spoke, and decided to replace them all.

...or, he could have been doing road-crossing jumps for a week with loose spokes and no oil....

You can't tell without looking or asking.

I bought the bike with a noisy top end, pulled it down and found the cyl worn. so I bought a Millenniun cyl. the rear wheel had taken a lick. I bought a spoke set( minus 4 spokes) off e bay and rebuilt the wheel it still has a slight flat spot of about .080." the tire runs really true on the bike. I,d ride it any where. This bike has not been babied. it was likely ridden. like a WR 450. I have factory schooling from both Yamaha and Kawasaki with over 25 years dealership experience as a service tech. The crank measured within specs when I checked it with a tenth indicatot, but might give problems at anytime. I have no intention of trying to pass off this bike as a pampered virgin. The prior owner added Factory Connections KYB front suspension upgrades for a 220lb rider, Im at 165 lbs. All the suspension points have been freshly greased and have good races The recluse clutch works perfectly. Ill knock off the price of a new E-starter.Clearly this is not a bike that you critical commentors would be interested in. I do believe it would make someone a very dependable ride. ITs just too much for me.

Let me just say it you didn't want anyone giving an opinion on price you shouldn't have posted the info publicly and simply pm'ed the OP directly if you were offering your bike to him, and/ or shouldn't have made the comment about pricing yours too low.

Just curious how is my assertion of your bike so wrong to call me "critical"? Noisy top end with a worn Nikasil coating screams a never changed air filter and you replaced broken spokes from a beat up wheel on a beat up bike. You've repaired it and its running fine and prolly a nice bike now (though you say your a mechanic and yet still have a broken estart, one of the largest selling points of the WR and an easy fix which would prolly get you closer to $3500) but it's still, in my mind as a potential buyer, a bike that lived a hard life and needs to be priced accordingly. Redone valves, sure, but I'll bet the head itself will be prone to failure in the future, not to mention any low end issues or tranny wear from abuse.

It's my opinion only to a potential buyer who's been asking based on a few pics and descriptions what bikes are worth, so I gave it to him along the assessment of yours.

Sorry to offend you, that was not my intention.
