The secret to making this work was the front caliper, I had to buy a complete caliper from Yamaha from the X to be able to switch this around, good thing it was only $160. The wheels I got for $850 and they are brand new take off wheels. The last thing to get will be the X front fork guards, the brake line clamp is lower on the X guards and I suspect the seal savers I have will not take such a beating from them as they have from the R white guards which rub holes in the inside of the forks on my seal savers :( I love the fact I can swap the wheels out in under an hour including bleeding the front caliper. In the future I want to get another front brake line and master cylinder to make the swap easier. I am running the R 43T rear sprocket and this seems like a good set up for the street, the 42T from the X is a joke. I have a new 47T for the R. Just need to splice in the extra links to accomadate both sets of wheels.

Thought you might want to see my tool bag set up for the rear. The OEM tool holder is a bit small and I wanted to carry some real tools around. I bought the regular rear fender bag from Dirtbikegear.com and then added the Pelican Mini case which fits perfectly inside the rear bag. You could also buy the Pelican case and bolt that up to the rear fender as well, too bad the blue is not a better match for the Yamaha color. They have them in black as well. here are some pics:

Sure am glad I bought this bike! Lot of fun and now with the two sets of wheels, two bikes in one! :smirk: :ride:

That thing is freaking awesome.

I have the R, but I really like the look of the R
in X clothing....:smirk:

Im probably going to do this same set up for
the bike when my boys start riding on the street.

Got a couple years to do my own thing with it
until then. :busted:

Looks good man....

Thanks, I am hoping to do at least one amatuer Super Moto event with it next year. They have a real nice Kart track at Road America here in Wisconsin....and I know they run Super Motos on it as well. I did two track days on the regular track with my 2002 FZ1 this summer (awesome BTW), so I think Sm on the WR will be a blast as well. We also want to get my son doing it as well with his KLX140. He likes to ride dirt, but I think he really wants to Road race...I know how he feels, but dirt is a great place to get some good skills for riding, and fun as well!

One of my twin sons is on a klx140 as well. Good bike.

Aha just the thread I needed to find and the man I needed to see. So you have to buy an X front caliper from Yamaha and bleed the brakes everytime you swap.

I currently have a 46T renthal on the rear for "R" duties but still have my 43T stock sprocket so I could put that on for X duty

And since I already have a chain long enough for the 46T I assume I just need to adjust the chain anytime I would do the swap

Bike on stand
Take off old wheels
Take off front caliper
Put on new caliper
Put on new wheels
Bleed Brakes
Adjust Chain?
Done?

Or am I missing some steps and this is easy to do in under an hour?

One alternative is to get a caliper relocation bracket. I have one from Braking, which lets you use the stock R caliper with either wheel size, without bleeding. Saves a little mess, though I'm sure with some practice, bleeding the front brake isn't a big deal.

Do you have a link for that? Is the X caliper really any better for stopping vs the change in rotor?

Does that work with the stock X front rotor also or only a 320 kit?

Keep in mind the brake pads are different as well, if you go with a relocation bracket you will not be using the right size pads for the X rotor...I am going to get another master cylinder and brake line so it is an easier swap to do and factory correct. The difference in braking is huge between an R and an X...bigger rotor and a slightly bigger brake pad...

Ah. So when you order the X model caliper you need to order a set of X model pads as well?

Still even if doing all that takes an hour its easier than spooning tires :P And a better result

It comes with pads, so that is one less thing you need to buy. :)

My '08 that I bought used a month ago came with both wheel sets and the caliper relocation bracket. This is definitely the way to go. Simple switch and the braking power of the "X" wheel rotor is amazing. Don't screw wiith the different caliper. No need.

Since I have both sets of the correct OEM parts, and can compare them back to back, all I can say is I would not want to mix brake parts as you are doing. Yamaha did what they did for a reason, the X rotor requires a larger pad with more support behind it which the X caliper provides. Does your set up work? I am sure it does, but IMHO, just because it is easy, does not make it right nor safe. Since the front brakes on any machine are the most important part of any brake system, this is not something I would want to take chances with for the sake of "easy" I am not saying you will have any problems, and I know that there are many such adapters on the market, I choose not to use one. So would using the Xcaliper and pad on the "R" have the same drawbacks vwsandman?

CaptTurbo do you know what relocation bracket it is I havent seen one yet that says its for the R/X

I would say so..... Then you would have oversize pads for the width of the expected brake pad surface on the R rotor.....

Don't get me wrong, it will all more than likely work, but I am anal and would not mix and match myself....

If you have an "R" and want to go to supermoto wheels, but, don't want to use an "X" front hub/brake set-up you can get a 320mm kit that would be for the recent year WR250/450 "F" This enables you to use your stock "R" caliper with a re-location bracket that would come with the 320mm kit.
You would have alot of options to choose
from,Braking,Motomaster,Brembo,EBC,etc.

I have an "R" and am likely buying the stock wheels/rotors setup from an "X"

So I am trying to figure out what I need to make the front stock X wheel work on my R

Either like sandman I spend 160 on a X caliper or another option which is why I was wondering about the relocation brackets.

Mainly evaluating cost and ease of swapping.

Until I get into some real SM racing or something I wouldnt see the need to go bigger on the front brake than the stock X setup

I think that would be a good way to go Jaynen...I got "lucky" and was able to get all OEM X parts, but this would work as well....

Excuse my ignorance, but if you have an R wouldn't it be easiest to mount an R rotor on an X wheel? Is that not possible or is the stopping power of the smaller rotor considered insufficient in SM trim?

Jaynen

Well rather than swap rotors everytime I swap wheels, plus the R front brake is lacking when you have street tires on the street

Your only listed upgrade on the website for the WRR was like 279 are there other options? Looking for the cheapest solution to start with and then will farkle later once the wife gives me more allowance
