What's up with auto insurance in NJ? I got an online quote and my rates jumped 5x what I pay here in NC! Is it really that bad? I have bnot had any accidents or tickets.

It is really that bad! Keep your cars registered and insured in NC if you can. It's what all the "Latino" people do up here to get a DL and car insurance if their visa or citizenship is less than legal.

It's really not that bad. I moved to NJ from CA and my rates went down with even better coverage. I have family in PA and I looked into registering my cars there, however the quote for insurance was significantly higher than what I pay in NJ.
The trick is to shop around. I got quotes from about five different companies and the range was pretty large. Take a look at NJ Cure, NJ Manufacturers, Geico, Esurance, or Mercury. There are others, but I've had the best luck with these.
You can always keep the NC registration and insurance. I see lots of people doing that, and there doesn't seem to be much enforcement. FL is another option: I think there are more Florida-registered cars in NJ than in FL!

Man I would love to but what happens when you get into an accident in NJ and you are plated in NC? My dad still resides here in NC and I could use his address but what do you give for jusstification when you get into an accident?

I'm not sure what happens, I don't think anything except that afterwards you will have to register and insure your car in NJ.
