If you have all that time and can't ride, why don't you wash that roach. I couldn't sleep at night if my tank was that dirty underneath. I certainly wouldn't be taking my petcock off with all that dirt and scum in the area either.

I'm just anal.
I did clean the area around the petcock before I changed it out. Then, after I removed the old one, I made sure the area was super clean before I put the new one on. The picture you see above is the "here is the area, let's look at it" picture (not the "here is the cleaned area, ready to be worked on").

I'm semi-anal. The area I'm working on needs to be very clean, I totally agree with you on that part. So as I paid attention to different areas, they got cleaned very well. I didn't do a very good "end of year" wash on my bike; the cold came fast this year.

However, I'm not super-anal about keeping the whole bike clean anymore. When she was new, I'd thoroughly wash it after every ride. It looked brand new off the showroom floor every time I took it out to ride. That lasted almost the whole year; then towards the end, I'd wash off the chunks, but not like, polish her up any more. Spray off the chunks, spray on some Simple Green, rinse it off; good enough. Just clean enough to see if anything looks messed up, and to remove the mud weight.

It's not so much that the honeymoon is over; it's just that washing the bike so much sucks! If I won the lottery and was hugely rich, that's a job I'd totally pay some one to do. Wash my bike, clean my air filter, change my oil, and lube my chain after every ride.

ps. I did the same mod to my 2003 YZ250F; the petcocks for the earlier years were way cheaper, I think I got that one for like fifteen bucks.

I just use a pressure washer... Doesn't suck....

Install cover on the air filter, put in exhaust plug, Spray, shoot some simple green on using a weed sprayer, then spray down the bike, getting the nooks and crannies and I'm done. Reinstall the air filter and take out the exhaust plug.

I used to do the whole thing with the garden hoses and brushed. Now that I have a life, a pressure washer is the only way to get it done.

Have you tried your local dealer? These guys, who I got mine from:

St. Boni Motorsports
952-446-1554

..said they physically got a fiche from Yamaha for the 2007 WR.

Thanks to you  I just gave my dealer that part number and ordered the part - it's around $49 by the time they were done with ripping me off. A few bucks more than your dealer, but I guess I should give them some support...

So I'm assuming that an '04 WR petcock would work on an '04 YZ.....

I assume so as well. I think the petcock is the same for all years, but don't quote me on that. I'm pretty sure I got a 2006 WR250F petcock, figured out it wouldn't fit (easily) on my 2006 YZ250F, so I put it on my 2003 YZ250F with no worries.

hey av, yes, I guess I do get a discount from "my local boyz". I don't ever expect it. I'm kinda tight with the dudes that work there, since I've been in there so much, I reckon. I gave them crap one day about sponsoring me, I'll happily accept the parts discount!

Strange how the cost of the petcock went up so much this year, but I suppose that since it's the first year that part was made..

hmm, might have to get an '06 one then...

Now if everybody runs out to buy one, supply and demand will drive the price up too haha.

I put this modification on my web page (http://av-motorcycles.gotdns.com:9296/06YZ250F/07wr250f_fuel_cock/index.html) for future references - thanks tranqwhl

I’m resurrecting an old post … for those of you who already made this modification …

1. How much fuel is left once you go reserve?

2. Any stalls at high RPM? I’m wondering why Yamaha made the double stems at the same height instead of making the reserve stem. Any chance the engine needs both valves drawing fuel at the same time?

the 250x and 450x have reserve, the WRF has a slightly larger tank. in 05, the yzf was i believe a 1.9gal and the wr's was a 2.1. the way the rigged it, was the wrf's "ON" had the same 1.9gal of fuel as the yzf, but turn it to "RES" and have 10-20 miles depending on how you ride

1. I have no idea! I will say that I have had to use reserve many times, and I have loved it each time. The farthest away I was ended up being only about five miles away. I rode mellow too, just to not push my luck.

The part I have loved is when I've almost burned through a full tank of gas practicing on a moto track. I'm really starting to be able to recognize that lean pop-pop-pop it starts doing before it "runs out". I reach down, flip a switch, and ride back to the truck. My friend had to push his because he ran out; right there I was happy for that mod.

2. nope, no "ill behavior" at high rpms that I can detect. She seems to scream just fine, for my C-class self, anyways!

One tube is sufficient, if it needed 2 tubes to suck at high rpm and with that much fuel going through those 2 tubes, you would run dry (empty the tank) within 3 minutes.

They designed it that way so that all they have to do is change the second tube to be longer and change the valve and you've got the reserve petcock for the WR instead of making a petcock with just 1 tube specifically for the YZF - simple economic for Yamaha.

So, let me get this straight......What part do I need to order to add a reserve feature to my 2002 YZF250???? A petcock from the same model year WR?? Or a petcock from a 2007 WR??? Thanks

2001-2005 YZ250F = 2006 and prior WR
2006 + YZ250F = 2007 and later WR

I made the change and went riding yesterday. It worked like a champ. Your idea is a thing of beauty ... it made my eyes water.

thank you very much! I love that mod too. I'll do it to every new bike I get.

The first time you hear it start to go pop-pop-pop, and you reach down, turn a switch, it goes back to "brrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!", and you ride slowly back to "base", your smile will be ten miles wide. Mine is every time I "run out of gas" and get to turn that switch and ride back to my truck.
