A friend of mine's has broken off an EZ Out in a bolt that he was trying to remove. Does anyone have an idea on how to remove the EZ Out?

I had a similiar issue, but was able to drill from the back side and knock it back out. If its really in there, I hear that no drill bit can cut it, you will have to take to a machine shop to use a special machine to cut it out. Hopefully someone here might have more info.

Chip away at it with a punch. These things are very strong, but they are also very brittle. If you can get to it, use a small prick punch to break it apart. You may have to sharpen the punch a few times, but chances are that you will be able to break it apart.

If you go at the bolt again with a ez out, use heat on it (a torch) and tap on the back of the ez out as you turn it. Be carfule not to force it and at all cost do not apply side pressure to the ez out or it will break again. This is a tool that you cannot skimp on quality and Craftsman would be skimping. Get a Snap On or MAC tools ez out and you will find it to be ten times as good as the one you pick up from Sears or the local auto parts store.

And the above mentioned machine shop idea, I believe they use what is called a EDM machine that will actually break the ez out up with electricity. This is a spendy route, and I think with a bit of patients and working at it you will be able to get it out with a punch and some picks. If there is enough sticking out around the top, drive at it with a punch in the clockwise direction and you may get it to back out without having to break it up to much. Good luck and it will come out, trust me.

One more thing that can help is to use a reverse direction drill bit. It cuts in the reverse direction and in a lot of cases it will remove the broken bolt before you even need to go for the eazy out.

I'd get a cobalt drill bit.

Drill bit won't touch it. Tha would be like trying to drill glass with a nail.... Good luck with that though.:busted:

Cobalt is too soft, maybe carbide but its brittle too and one chip and its history. You need a special carbide only stone to resharpen. If its in there deep and no movement from it at all....an EDM (electro discharge machine) is your only hope! Unless, like mentioned, you can drill to it from the opposit side.
If you do get it out, chances are the surrounding material willbe damaged. Use a heli-coil (special drill, tap and insert) to repair the damaged threads.

Good luck to your buddy.

Mk is right about the EDM. We have one made by Mitsubishi and is used 95% of the time just for this purpose. Mose of the time the threads aren't even messed up. It's called an EDM plunge. The better machine shops usually have them.

I'm a machinist, and I never, ever use E-Z-outs for this very reason. I know some people swear by them, but lots more people swear AT them. The only way your going to get it out now is with an EDM. Hammering on it with a punch is a great way to lose an eye, so use safety glasses before you give it a try.
