This is my winter project. I bought a do it yourself fuel injection ECU. I plan to fuel inject my DR 350 SE. Right now I am assembling the ECU then I will move onto installing it on the bike. After thinking about the project for quite a while it really does not seem that hard or expensive. I will post pictures of the progress.

Can the alternator drive that unit? Remember that you will need the wattage to run the ECU and a fuel pump. Keep us posted.

You must have big uns. Just thinking about fuel pump, injector, and all the peripheral stuff to talk to the ECU would have me in a sweat. Then would probably have to change the mapping so more money. You go man!

Here is a link to a forum about the ECU

Tons of info here.

Very cool indeed. Good link but theres so much information on that board maybe you can answer a few of my questions.
How much do you plan to spend?
What sensors do you plan on using? o2, tps, map, mas, iat, any others?
What kind of throttle body will you use?
I have many more questions but I dont want to overwhelm you. Thanks

megasquirt ECU kit $140.00
fuel injetor about $30.00
fuel pump $100.00
O2 sensor not mandantory but about $40.00
ECU kit comes with a MAP sensor
TPS about $20.00
temp sensors $15.00 each
I can convert the exhisting carburetor to be a throttle body

The prices seem reasonable. How do you program the ECU through a link to a PC or possibly burning EEPROM? It seems like getting the fuel map right would take a good deal of tweaking, any ideas on how you might approach the tuning side of things?

No PROM burning required, the ECU kit comes pre programed. You down load tuning software and tune through a laptop. Check out this site there is a long list of FAQ's that explain a lot.

Sounds interesting wildwest. How are you going to control the idle? Will you fit an IAC somehow (if you use the std carby as a throttle body?)

For an auto system this is done with a Idle Speed Control valve. Just a bypass valve driven by the ECU that ports air to the throttle body.

What about a crank sensor? the ECU will need a rpm signal to increase fuel delivery with increased rpm. or will it receive engine speed reference from the ignition system?

RPM comes from ignition signal

I am just about done with the assembly of the ECU and so far it has tested out perfect. I have sourced a pair of throttle bodies from an SV 650 wich I plan to use one of them for the throttle body. I will try to snap a pic of the ECU this afternoon.

throttle bodies are on their way. The ECU is functioning perfectly on the tester. I will order the fuel pump and a couple of temp sensors this week.

Have you given any thought as to where you will mount the fuel pump or how you will work the fuel return line in to the system? How much current will this system draw?

i will have to put a fitting on the tank for a return line. I have not added up the total current required yet but I am confident I will have enough.

Can you elaborate on how you plan to do this fitting? I'm planning this very thing for a different kind of bike (BMW R90) and I'm stuck as to how to mount the return line without welding in a new bung.

On the R90 you got two petcocks and two tees in the fuel lines, why not just plug it in anywhere.

I have an aftermarket plastic tank. Mounting a leak proof fitting should not be a problem
Are you going to use a megasquirt?

There are two petcocks on the R90, but if I use one for a return, I lose half of my gas tank. I thought about making one side the return But I would lose a lot of fuel capacity and I could only use the returning fuel if enough was pushed back to flow over the hump in the tank.

I think this will be the first fuel injected dr 350. I am almost done with the throttle body. http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q179/wildwestsydney/DSCF0019.jpg

How's everything else coming along? Did you get all your hardware mountings sorted out? What about sensors? It would be great if you were able to share a little more of your work with us. I'm really hoping you get it to work and I would love to know what kind of issues you face along the way.

Almost ready to try and start it for the first time as a fuel injected bike. Tested out the fuel pump, regulator and injector today it all worked great. I think I will have some time tomorrow to mount the ECU. It is looking good for a start up next weekend.

Got it running today. It has been a longer process than I thought but boy does it sound sweet. Fuel Injection is the way toss out the brass. I will update when I get the wiring all cleaned up and I have taken it for a spin.

Today mounted the fuel pump, fuel regulator, installed the O2 sensor, rerouted all the fuel lines, got the return line all routed, it is very close to a test ride
I can not believe will all the threads started about jetting that this thread does not get more traffic. I guess everyone would rather wrestle with carbs than investigate bringing your bike into the 21st century

It is totally awesome!:worthy: I think the lack of traffic may be the title... when I first saw it I thought... "oh no, not another thread about changing the color of the plastic"...
This should be doable with a DR650 also, wouldn't you think? What have been the hurdles for you? what have you learned so far? what would you do differently? EFI just seems to be such a black box proposition, where did you learn the basics?
