I have maybe, maybe worked it out with Surdyke, but please, if anyone is considering ordering from them, take my advice and DON'T.
Their system is very frustrating, after you complete an order, it takes you to a blank page, and you don't get any notice for days that you were able to order something.
If you want to call, there is nobody who will speak to you, they forward you to voice jail instead, and there is nowhere to leave a message, just have to listen to a loop explaining that you can check your order status online, but you cannot, since all the info you get is emails with two letters and a number 0.

So frustrating.
I eventually managed to order the correct parts, but who knows what will arrive, or when it will.

Also, they will only say that my refund (for the discontinued part) is pending. It's not even available, yet they will try to sell it. Arghhh!
So slimy.

Sounds/looks like a great system... has anyone put one these kits on an XR650L? My son and I just bought 2 and being seen and seeing are both in the top 5 to dos. not so familiar with the Suzies set up... :moon: :) all of the setups shown have looked pretty sweet. not so crazy about the bug smashers but, wonder if I could fit the light kit inside the existing face plate?.. any XR pics? any 650L set up info? good thread

Bugger it. Man, I am STILL waiting for my parts.

I will NEVER, NEVER, buy a Buell, or any parts for one again. NEVER.

This is crazy. Imagine if I owned a Buell, and had to wait this long for parts, and couldn't ride all this time. Sheesh!!!!

Avi, if you are considering a Buell setup, buy it used. Unless the dealer has it in stock, or can GUARANTEE you can get it quickly, I would just forget about it.

Aside from that, mounting on an XR shouldn't be much different from a DR, in all honesty, most bikes are nearly identical up there, aside from clearances and fork tube diameter. It's just a light. :)

If I could do it again, I would simply buy a GSXR light from eBay, and make the brackets. If I hadn't paid hundreds of dollars (UGH!) for this setup already, I would have canned the idea.

One thing for sure, I will not do it again. No sir.

ok, i'll bite, a question for the guys that have done this mod.

where did you stuff all your original wiring?

with the stock headlight, its all compacted behind the fairing and unseen. how is this done with the buell light mod?

can someone put up a few pics on how the stock wiring was hidden behind the lights please?

cheers!

This is why I hate Ridelater (Ridenow). They bought out most of the dealers in town (Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Buell/harley). Their inventory is limited, their sales tactics/staff/methods suck sweaty homeless balls. It takes a long time to get parts, if you even get the right parts.

I try my hardest to spend my money at local shops, then the internet like Bikebandit, Rockymountain or Ronayers.

OK, so they finally arrived. Missing the hardware, but I guess that's normal.

ONE. Nothing is metric. Should have guessed, since they are a US company, but come on, they must be like the only ones using SAE hardware on a new vehicle anymore. Probably Harley also, but they don't count. 1/4-20 is standard on the housing threads, I forgot what thread was used to attach the windguard/shield. Nice thing is that this is easy to get at most hardware stores, in SS even.

TWO. Bright. Even with the two 55W lights only, pretty bright. Much better than the original tiny dirt only light I had. Big improvement. Maybe not worth the wait, but I will reserve final judgement for a longer night ride. Quick ride around the yard/swamp/hill was impressive.

THREE. WTH is with the miniscule 20Ga wiring? I suppose they were trying to save weight, maybe? I am going to replace the wiring with 14Ga and one bulb with a higher wattage for high beam, and integrate a relay for high beam. As it is now, I don't even have a switch. Bike on, lights on.

I wonder if I can use a dual element bulb in this fixture? That would be handy for high beams. I see no use at all for the little running light, going to leave it disconnected for now. I always run with a headlight on, no matter where I am.

I will post a pic later. I installed it last night, when it was kind of dark.

What kind of news are you hoping for?
It works, it's expensive, and you wait a long time to get it. If you are at all handy, you could adapt half a dozen different types of lights from wrecked sport bikes. GSXR units are in abundance on eBay, as are many others. Cheaper too. In addition to getting them quickly, they will probably have adjustable beams also. These are not very adjustable. Ok, not at all adjustable, unless you build it into the mount.

I installed the Buell Dual Headlights on my 2007 DR650. It came out GREAT!!

I did it a bit different than most, I mounted mind upside down using the existing stock headlight bracket. Reason is that it put the headlights higher on the tree and set me up perfectly for adding a smoke-gray windscreen. For the space under the headlights (remember the lights were mounted high on the tree), I installed Wolfman's black tool bag ... where I keep my rain gear.

I can't post images to the forum, so to see a pic of the bike (looks kinda cool if I must say so), check my web site. I have detailed this and all other mod's I've done to the bike.

I tried to wire the headlights the way you described in your website, through a relay but must have something wrong because the highbeam won't come on. I'm not sure if should run the wire from pole 87 to the highbeam wire on the handle bar switch? Where is the headlight wiring harness? Under the seat near the headlight fuses?

For pole 87 on the relay, you're connecting to the high beam wire coming off the handle bar switch. Trace the wires from the handlebar switch and you should find they connect with a modular plug in the tangle of wires above the front wheel forks.

Look straight at the one coming from the switch. You should be able to orient it so it forms a triangle (sorry, best way I can describe it). The high beam wire "should" be in the lower left of the triangle.

If I remember right, it had individual wires plugging into it. Should be one for low beam, high beam, and a hot. You're looking to plug into the one for high beam. As I described on the website (http://mistyoak.org/dr650/BuellHeadlights.html), you're looking for the lower left one as you look at the harness.

Try it plugging into it and test it. Plug the wire from pole 87 to it and fire up the bike. When you switch to high beam on the handlebar switch, if it doesn't come on, try plugging it into one of the others on that modular plug. There's only three there, so one's gotta work. And to make sense, the hot wire to the handlebar switch still needs to be plugged in, but the lowbeam doesn't ... since you are powering it elsewhere now (if you followed my method). So there should only be two open slots in that three-wire handlebar switch harness to plug into (low and high beam).

Shout if you still can't get it, I'll go dig into my bikes front tree and get a picture. Cheers!

I paid about $85 for the headlight and headlight grill about 18 months ago. I just googled the part numbers to find the web sites selling the parts and went with the cheapest.

1. Buell Headlight Assembly - Part Y0421.1ADA ~$50
2. Buell Headlight Grille - Part M0023.1AJAYT ~$35

khornet, can you check if these parts are available at the prices you stated ?

I want to put these on my DR350.

I have just discovered this thread & there is a lot of good info here. Sorry to take you guys off tangent here, but do you think my 94 DR350SE can power this soon to be released DOT light (http://www.trailtech.net/dual-sport_x2.html) from Trail Tech? Will I have to use a relay or will it be ok without?

udaloy,

Sorry I bought my Buell parts two years ago and don't recall who I got them from. But all I did was google using the part numbers and then went with the site that had the lowest price. Try that.

Much as I wanted a Buell, it was over-priced. So I started looking and ended up with this

The lights are Hella, and integrated onto the stock DR650 headlight cowl so that I could easily swop it between the DR650, and DR350.

I am still using my Buell lights, but now on my DRZ400e. I put an ebay HID kit in one of them, and use it as a high beam, and it's AMAZING. It lights up crazy amounts of road and trail. If I turn it on during the day, even in sunlight, it lights up street signs and reflectors. :ride:

But, if I were to do it again, I wouldn't. I would just purchase the Baja Designs HID kit.
A friend of mine has the round light, with three different lights inside of it, some of which are HID. It's pretty sweet, works great, and is tough as nails. That's what I would do.

The way I mounted this, is the only way I could come up with, because I don't have a machine shop, don't know anyone with any machining capabilities, and couldn't find any products to use to mount these lights. So, it looks like crud, but works like stink. So, it's a draw.

+1 on the high beam hid, it rocks. Had it on the low as well, but was too much (and not legal). Still spooks me to see deer with GLOWING white eyes, but it's nice to see them a long ways out
