Well I just ordered the buell headlight and windscreen, and I was thinking about installing from www.comagination.com The wiring harness/relay for dual headlights, in my search of the thread some say its a H4 others H7?
Any help would be appreciated.
G..rash

I used to have a Cityx. It was an H7. I thought all were H7.

I found on www.comagination under "vehicle application listings" that all Buells are H4?
I guess I'll have to wait until my buell headlights are in to check to see if its H4 - three blade or H7 two blade connection?

I believe its two H-7s.

where can I get all the components online? All I'm finding are the grilles and flyscreens

I was able to find everything I wanted at http://www.ironmachine.com
Not necessarily the cheapest, but at least they had all the bits, and international shipping which I needed.

HEADLAMP GRILLE ( # M0023.1AJAYT )
HEADLAMP BRACKET ( # M0645.1ADA )
COMPLETE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY ( # Y0421.1ADA )
SUNFIRE YELLOW WINDSCREEN ( # M1600.1ADMAL )

I found this setup from a single headlight Buell on the Orlando Craigslist for $20! The brackets were for a Suzuki SV650, and matched up with the stock holes on the DR650 headlight bracket.
Most will agree it looks better than my original setup!
The light is considerably better than the stocker with a Sylvania Silverstar +50 bulb, powered through a relay. Not quite as bright as the twin setup.
The flyscreen is surprising in it's coverage, but again not as full as my homemade barn door! Not really an issue here in Florida!

Do you know which relay and part number to use for the headlamp?

Would one of the comagination.com solid state relays work? :excuseme:

Any headlight relay should work. They are available at auto stores for a few bucks. Same for the headlamp, if by that you mean the bulb, but they cost a little or a lot more depending on what you want. BTW the buell comes with bulbs (at least mine did). I replaced them with silverstars

Back from the dead. I called most local Buell dealer, and they were a little clueless, but eventually got me the prices I needed. I was pretty surprised at the price difference a few years makes. Whew.

Part No Description Qty Price
M0023.1AJAYT HEADLIGHT GRILLE 1 (didn't bother asking)
M1600.1ACMW WINDSCREEN KIT WDECAL MIDNIGHT BLACK 1 (again, didn't ask)
Y0421.1AD HDLIGHT ASSY RH TRAFFIC 1 $140 (holy cats!!)
M0645.1ADA MOUNT HEADLAMP 1 $23.95 (pretty much the same)

Still want to do the mod, but going to have to wait to find one used maybe.

Just as a side note, I modded my XT's headlight (55/60W), and added 2 auxilliary spotlights (55W each) to the side of the housing. Running with 165W of lighting, the stator seems A-OK. Bright as hell also, and it only cost me R95 (about $12). How's it look? Uh, think of it as a cross between a cyclops and a hammerhead shark. Will post a pic as soon as my PC decides to work... again.

Maybe a Honda Ruckus headlight assembly is a consideration.

Perhaps, though I have read that the light they produce is not very impressive. Someone said it was about as good as one dull car headlight. I would like to see one at night to know for myself, but in the meantime, I am more likely to just pick up a scuffed up sportbike headlight assembly, and use that.

Honda only sells the individual pieces. by the time you're done with all the bolts, washers and bracket, you're out much more than the buell setup, close to $250, I already looked into this and this is dealer net pricing:censored: .

I just purchased the buell light and bracket for my zb50 for $73 shipped from surdyke.com , check it out...2005 prices in effect!!! then I'm going to throw those 55w H7 bulbs away and run dual HIDs. The original ZB50 light is 25w/25w so those halogens would cook the electricals. HIDs require 35w to fire and run at about 8W

What kind of HIDs are you going to run? Most of the kits I have seen are supposed to use about 35W but will usually draw 40 or so. Plus more to fire as you mentioned.

This is the same information I have. I installed dual HID bulbs and ballasts in my Ducati Multistrada. They always say HID produces 3 times the lumens using only about 1/2 the wattage of a halogen.

Here is my experience with HID on my DR650.

I have HID running on my stock headlamp. It is a HID and Halogen combo for Lo, and Hi beam respectively. The HID was not stable as it went on and off, and I would need to toggle the Hi/Lo beam till the HID becomes stable. At times, the HID will turn off after a period of running.

Initially I suspected that this was cause by a defective ballast or HID bulb so I checked with the supplier, and he told me to upsize the stock fuse (10A) to 15A, as the HID was drawing slightly more than 10A.

With the 15A fuse, the HID is stable but I would need the bike to run a few seconds before firing up the HID.

Not quite, they told me today it's no longer available... boooo:foul:

Most dirtbikes do not have a stable voltage at idle, hence the HID fliker. Once lit, an HID uses about 1/3 of the rated ampeage to stay lit

What kit did you use?
You might consider running it through a relay and heavier wire for more consistant voltage.

Mine is Roox, from S. Korea. This kit is specially designed for bikes.

It's plug and play. It came with a harness extension, so that the ballast can be located under the seat. Unfortunately, the ballast is too fat to fit under our seat, so the ballast is hidden under the headlight.

I've use a dual HID setup on my Blackbird. I can't recommend them enough. I will eventually replace the standard bulbs, perhaps once the evenings start getting shorter.

They do make a huge difference without a doubt. My concern on the DR would be the vibration and whether the alternator windings could cope with the current surge on light up.

The kits seem to be fairly cheap these days; I bought the one's for the Blackbird from E-bay and they cost me around £30 from HK. I've put around 15k miles on the bike since without a problem to the electrics or the lighting function.

It is the way forward!

My setup is HID, and Halogen Combo for Lo, and Hi beam respectively, and I paid about USD111.00 (when converted).

There is a Dual HID ie. Hi and Lo beam both are HID, that would definitely cost more but I don't have the prices off hand.

As for the ballast, now you can choose the slim type which can be store under the DR650 seat, but that slim ballast with the HID, and Halogen Combo will cost
about USD185.00

I ordered a Buell kit from that site listed a few posts back, hope it comes in OK. I got the white flyscreen kit too, which almost doubles the price.

Hmm.. that's a shame, as I have already paid for it, and it seems as though it has shipped.

Wonder what I will get. If anything.

your money back... I talked to my local dealer and he helped me locate the last existing one in Chicago, but that turned out to be a computer mistake, so the cheapies are gone forever. the new part number is $111 from the same dealer which seems to be the cheapest still.

I got my HID from ebay. for 2 bulbs and slim ballasts, $80 shipped. tons of sellers out there.

Has anyone done a HID in a buell or some other quality reflector? If it works with the stock reflector it would rock with the buell, much better pattern. The buell is quite an improvement over stock and they use the same bulb, add more light and things should get even better. Even before adding the ability to run hi and lo at the same time either side of the buell is much better than stock (I have compared them side by side with another DR)
