The Big Sky Challenge Hill Climb is the first of a three-part Western States Hill Climb series, which includes the Great American Championship Motorcycle Hill Climb and Widowmaker. These three hills make up some of the toughest hill climb courses found in the world. Close to five hundred riders will convene in Billings to take on the “little brother” to the world-famous Great American in mid-May.
Billings Motorcycle Club has been hill climbing “western style” for 90 years and we have developed a sport that isn’t for the faint of heart. Western style hill climbing requires riders to start at the base of the hill with no running start. Large engines, proper gearing and special tires allow riders to hit high speeds in seconds. The hills are steep (near vertical in some areas) and filled with natural obstacles that riders must negotiate at high speeds. One small error can stop a bike and send it and the rider crashing down the hill. Western style hill climbing is definitely an extreme sport.
A grassy fenced area allows visitors to get up close to the hill and the action. Crowds are smaller than those at the Great American and the focus is purely on the riders and their motorcycles as one after the other charges up the hill. Some make it over the top but just as many take some breathtaking tumbles when they hit the vertical walls of shale.
Spectators are welcome. Concessions are available and ample parking allows them to watch from a variety of vantage points. Remember to bring your lawn chairs because seating is very limited. Come out and see the some of the most extreme motorcycling Montana has to offer – big bikes revved up under the big Montana sky!
